Local Ancaster artist Paul Knowles is
known for his portrayal of the back alleys, houses and natural
landscapes of his surroundings. He creates a beautifully heightened
graphic quality in his work by breaking down and simplifying a
scene’s colours into shadow, mid-tones and highlights and using a
clean, precise and flat application of paint. His work is often
characterized by his use of light, shadow and simple geometric
forms, which lend themselves pleasingly to his subject matter
inspired by his everyday surroundings. These include urban
streetscapes, familiar everyday objects, simple architecture and
icons of typically Canadian landscape and leisure. Together these
elements make for a unique and striking collection, widely
accessible.
