Paul Knowles was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1945. He developed an interest in art in public school, and won numerous awards at an early age. He studied drawing and painting with Eleanor F. Clinton, Jean Wishart and Jose Collega. Paul graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art where he studied advertising, photography and design. After graduation he worked for the McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences and established the Medical Illustration and Design Department. One of the highlights of his career at McMaster was winning a Canadian Productivity Gold Medal for co-developing the McMaster/Mohawk College digital print-on-demand custom courseware program.

In 2002, he retired from his career as the Director of Media Production Services, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON.

Paul currently lives in Ancaster, Ontario and spends his time painting in his studio and travelling.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The subject matter for much of my work comes from my everyday surroundings and my frequent travels to northern Ontario and the east coasts of Canada and the USA. My art reflects an appreciation of light and shadows. It is the inspiration for my painting.

I always carry my camera with me looking for interesting subject matter for my paintings. I like to take a scene, a building, a back alley or an object such as an old window or truck and break it down into simple geometric shapes creating planes of colour and patterns of light and shadows.

I also like to close crop my subject matter and design the negative shapes to create the shape of the scene or subject. I enjoy experimenting with its placement on the canvas simplifying its colour into shadows, mid-tones and highlights using a clean, precise and flat application of oil paint.

I enjoy pushing the local colour to heighten the response of the viewer.
