ARTIST STATEMENT
The subject
matter for much of my work comes from my everyday surroundings and
my frequent travels to northern Ontario and the east coasts of
Canada and the USA. My art reflects an appreciation of light and
shadows. It is the inspiration for my painting.
I always
carry my camera with me looking for interesting subject matter for
my paintings. I like to take a scene, a building, a back alley or an
object such as an old window or truck and break it down into simple
geometric shapes creating planes of colour and patterns of light and
shadows.
I also like
to close crop my subject matter and design the negative shapes to
create the shape of the scene or subject. I enjoy experimenting with
its placement on the canvas simplifying its colour into shadows,
mid-tones and highlights using a clean, precise and flat application
of oil paint.
I enjoy
pushing the local colour to heighten the response of the viewer.
